1.How much time does it take to kill a tree?
Ans. According to the poem “On Killing A Tree”, it takes much time to kill a tree.

2.Why does it take much time to kill a tree?
Ans. It takes much time to kill a tree because a tree grows up slowly absorbing air water and sunlight for years and a simple strike of a knife can’t kill a tree completely.

3.How has the tree grown up?
Ans. A tree has grown up consuming necessary elements from earth and absorbing air, water and sunlight for years.

4.What does ‘crust’ mean?
Ans. Theword ‘crust’ means the upper layer of the earth.

5.What does the expression ‘leprous hide’ mean?
Ans. In the poem “On killing a Tree”, leprous hide refers to the rough bark of a tree. The bark has been compared to the skin of a leprocy patient.

6.What would not kill tree alone?
Ans. A tree can’t be killed completely by hacking and chopping. A simple strike of a knife also fails to kill.

7.What will happen after hacking and chopping of a tree?
Ans. Even after the hacking and chopping of a tree, a tree heals its wounds and produces curled green twigs.

Ans  In order to kill a tree completely the roots should be pulled out entirely.

Ans  By the above phrase the roots are taken as the anchor of a ship. Just as the anchor gives stability to a ship, the roots keep the tree fixed on earth.

Ans. The phrase “earth cave” refers to the gaping hole in earth when the roots are pulled out.

19.What lies hidden inside the earth?
Ans. The roots of a tree remain hidden inside the earth.

20.How does the poet describe the roots?
Ans. Gieve Patel has described the roots as ‘ the strength’, ‘the source, white and wet’ and the most sensitive part of a tree.
