1. What happened to Mrs.Jones while she was returning home ?
Ans :- One night Mrs.Jones was returning home at about 11 O'clock after completing her work at a hotel beauty shop. She was walking alone with a large purse. Suddenly a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse. The strap broke with a single tug the boy gave from the behind. As the purse was too heavy the boy could not maintained the combined weight of him and the purse. So he fell on his back on the sidewalk. Then Mrs.Jones came to him and picked him up by his shirt front.
2. How did Mrs. Jones treat Roger in house?

Describe the motherly affection noticed in the character of Mrs. Jones.
Ans: - After Roger’s futile attempt of snatching the purse, Mrs. Jones brought him to her house, gripping his shirt firmly. On the way she noticed that Roger was frail and weak, and his face was also dirty. So, after dragging him to her house, she let him loose to wash his face. On the other hand she cooked food with motherly affection and served him. After dinner being over, she gave him half of a ten cent cake as dessert. Even at the time of departure, she gave Roger ten dollars to buy blue suede shoes, for which he had attempted snatching. All the above mentioned activities show that Mrs. Jones treated Roger with motherly love and affection.
3. Why did the boy try to snatch the purse of Mrs. Jones? How did Mrs. Jones stop Roger from snatching?
Ans :- At about eleven o’ clock when Mrs. Jones was returning from her working place, Roger, a fourteen year old boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse. The strap of the purse broke as Roger gave the tug from behind; and Roger’s own weight combined with the weight of the purse, caused him lose balance. So Roger fell on his back on the sidewalk. Mrs. Jones immediately turned around and kicked Roger with full blow right at his abdomen. She picked him up by his shirt front and shook him vigorously until his teeth rattled.
4. Why did Roger not try to run away later although he had an opportunity to do so ?
Ans :- Though Roger tried to snatch the pocketbook of Mrs.Jones he was not brutally treated by the woman. Rather he was taken to her house and offered to have food with her. Then Roger told the woman that the reason behind snatching the pocketbook was to buy a pair of blue suede shoes. After that Roger realised that she was not like other women. He found motherly affection in Mrs.Jones. This thought possibly brought a change in the honest and simple mind of Roger. In fact Roger was not a thief. He just needed some money for buying a pair of blue suede shoes. So he tried to keep himself within the woman's sight as long as he was in her house. He did no more want to be mistrusted by the woman. So Roger did not try to escape from the house despite having a chance.
5. “ He did not trust the woman and …………………….. mistrusted.“ Who is he here ? Who is the woman ? Why did not he be mistrusted ?

On one night Mrs. Jones was returning home at eleven o’clock. A boy named Roger ran up behind her and tried to snatched her purse. Knowing that the boy roger has made offence Mrs. Jones brought him to her home . She then asked the boy to clean his face in the sink . Mrs.Jones offered him cocoa , lima beans and ham. She also cut him a half of her ten-cent cake.
Finally Mrs.Jones gave him ten dollars to buy blue sued shoes . She then asked Roger not to make such mistake of latching of anyone’s purse and behave himself. Thus she made the boy understand to achieve some thing by hard work not by devilish like . Though Roger was wrong she did not hate him . Roger was amazed at the kindness of Mrs. Jones and touched by her motherly affection so :- he did not want to be mistrusted.
6. ‘And he never saw her again’---- who are the person here in the line? How they came to meet ? what was the feeling of his about her at the time of parting?
Ans:- Roger and Mrs. Jones
It was eleven o’ clock at night when Mrs. Jones was returning home alone a boy named Roger ran up behind her and tried to snatched her purse. And she caught the boy as he fell down on the ground. Thus they came to contact with one another.
At the time of parting the boy wanted to say something else other than ‘Thank you ma’am’. But he could not do so as he turned back at the large woman in the door. He barely managed to say ‘Thank you’.
